Uniforms are worn by a wide range of people across various organisations; the most stereotypical being schools, the emergency services and the armed forces. However uniforms can apply to almost any establishment; whether it’s an all-in-one protective suit or a button down shirt with a company logo. Historical research shows that the first work uniforms date back to at least the Middle Ages but what benefits do they bring?
Brand Awareness
The effect that a uniform has on a company’s brand can be very substantial. Particularly when a firm’s logo is on a uniform, this acts as instant brand exposure; this is the case for both small businesses that have recently started up and larger companies that already have a well-recognised brand. When staff are out of the office wearing their uniform, whether this is inside or outside working hours, they act as a walking advert for the company. When the company logo is seen more and more by the public, it begins to stick in their minds and this is an easy way of drawing in potential customers. As well as uniforms assisting with corporate brand awareness, they are also used socially to help market a group of people e.g. hen parties, sports clubs or charity events.
Professional Image
Implementing a professional uniform and dress code eliminates the chances of staff not looking smart enough for business meetings and events; likewise this could set the wrong impression for customers and other staff members. Having a consistent appearance is one of the main benefits to a professional business uniform. When employees are wearing a uniform, they are more likely to be approached by both customers and potential customers. This is due to the professional image that is conveyed.
Team ethic
Having a uniform in place provides a unified image for the team. A uniform can act as a source of promotion for team spirit. It can also help employees to share a feeling of belonging, which can be difficult to achieve in certain business circumstances.
Protection
In a variety of settings, a uniform provides an element of safety and protection. Some examples of where uniforms provide physical protection to the employee are builders wearing hard hats, industrial workers wearing high-vis vests and machine operatives wearing goggles. As well as protecting the employees themselves, uniforms also protect any clothing that a person is wearing, preventing it from getting dirty or damaged. Certain jobs require a uniform as a legal requirement to meet industry standards. This is common in the service industry with jobs such as construction, healthcare, security, police and the military. Many of these uniforms require specialist fabrics e.g. firemen for them to be able to perform their job in the right clothing. Also, wearing a uniform in a larger workplace helps senior staff to identify employees; for example anyone not wearing a uniform in a warehouse or factory setting would be instantly recognised as an intruder.
Dress Issues
Similar to a school environment, if no dress code is enforced then people will always try and push the boundaries and wear inappropriate clothing. Having a workplace with no particular dress code can also cause employees to feel under pressure to compete with their colleagues and follow certain fashion trends. Having a uniform in place eradicates the need for a dress code, you simply need to state how the uniform should be worn, and this removes the chances of employees feeling the need to spend money on a competitive wardrobe. Uniforms help to create a consistent appearance among a group of employees do not identify rich and poor thus promoting equality.
